Choosing the
right diapers for you (and your baby)
There are as many ways to diaper a baby as there are, well,
ways to feed a baby, carry a baby, put a baby to sleep . . . see where I’m going
with this? As with all things related to babies, every mom has her own
preference. Yes, I am trying to say that we each have our own diaper
philosophy. And we will help you find yours.
First, consider which benefits of cloth diapers you value
most.
-
To
keep baby driest and prevent diaper rash, Fuzzi Bunz are exactly what you
want.
-
To save the most money on diapers, 2 dozen prefolds and
a few covers will set you up
-
Guess what? The cheapest system is also the most
environmentally friendly.
-
If you want diapers even Dad will be happy to change,
the Bumkins All in One is as simple as a disposable—but you can wash it!
There may be a few moms who are passionately loyal to one
kind of diaper. But most moms have a few kinds in their “stash.” My own
includes a variety of diapers, because each has its benefit.
The “Kristi” System
My babies have always slept in Fuzzi Bunz stuffed with a prefold. Up to 12 hours with no leaks, and no changing diapers in the dark—can
it get more convenient or efficient? I also sometimes use Fuzzi Bunz during the
day with a Micro Insert, if I am fighting diaper rash or need to go longer
between changes. I use prefolds and covers at home during the day, and keep
Bumkins All in Ones for the Diaper Bag. (Who am I kidding? I use up the All in
Ones as soon as they come out of the laundry, because they are just too easy!)
This system gives me just enough to wash diapers every 3rd
or 4th day. You could wash more frequently, but using that much water
and energy seems a waste to me, especially when one of the reasons I cloth
diaper is to have less of an environmental impact. Also, I just can’t handle
that much laundry!
If you tend to leave the laundry in the dryer awhile
before putting it away, then you’ll want to order a few more diapers. That way
you always have several left at the changing table, even when the rest is in the
laundry.
As always, each mom has her own philosophy. If you want to
